Ivan Ilych

Write a short paragraph describing how Tolstoy satirizes the world of the law courts.

The law courts have stopped for a break, the members and public prosecutors have all gone to Egorovich Shebek’s rooms. They are all talking about a case one had. Suddenly someone rushes in, declaring that Ivan Ilych has died. They pass the paper around for all to see. Tolstoy has taken a sad situation and used dry humor. The first is the Death Notice in the paper. His wife had made the announcement making it sound formal but with no loving feelings involved. Ivan despised his wife, and she the same as well.  With the news settling in, they all started wondering about the changes and who was to be promoted, no concern for Ivan. One said it would be him as he had been promised, and he was counting on the extra money that came with the promotion. Another thinking about how his brother-in-law would benefit and he would benefit at home. Then they all spoke about the property if he had any, and they must go and give the grieving wife their condolences. No one cared about the man who just died. They only thought about what they could get out of the position he had left.
